Artificial Grass for Kids' Play Areas in BC: Safety, Softness and What to Ask

5 min read ·

Parents who switch to artificial grass for their kids' play area usually do it for one of two reasons: mud, or they are getting rid of loose-fill bark or pea gravel that scatters everywhere. Both are valid. A properly installed play turf solves both problems and adds a layer of fall protection that neither a bare grass lawn nor most loose-fill surfaces can match.

What makes playground turf different from a lawn install

The key addition is a shock pad, a layer of foam or rubber underlayment between the base and the turf. The shock pad absorbs impact energy in a fall, which is what makes a play surface safe rather than just soft. Without it, even a thick turf pile compresses to almost nothing on impact. The pad stays resilient over years of use.

Shock pads come in different thicknesses and are rated to a Critical Fall Height, which is the maximum drop height at which a head impact is unlikely to cause a life-threatening injury. The pad thickness you need depends on the height of your play equipment. Swings and climbing frames that go higher need a thicker pad. A simple flat play area with no elevated equipment needs a much thinner one. We spec the pad to the actual equipment height, not a generic default.

What about surface temperature?

Synthetic turf can get warm in direct afternoon sun. In a Fraser Valley summer this is a real consideration. The honest answer is that the temperature on a synthetic play surface is comparable to a black asphalt pathway or a composite deck in the same conditions: warm enough that bare feet are uncomfortable at peak sun. Shoes resolve it completely. For daycares or school areas where bare feet are common, we can specify cooler-running infill options that reduce surface temperature. Worth discussing on site.

Mud-free, debris-easy, year-round

The practical wins for families are large. No more muddy shoes tracked inside from October to April. No more bark mulch scattered across the patio or tracked into the house. No pea gravel in shoes and pockets. The play area is usable the day after heavy rain because a properly drained turf surface sheds water fast. And in a Fraser Valley winter, a clean play surface that the kids can actually use is something parents with small children notice immediately.
