The honest comparison
Artificial turf vs natural grass in Fraser Valley weather
Real grass and the Fraser Valleyclimate are a rough match. We get 1,600 mm of rain a year, long soggy winters, and a dry July that burns untreated lawns fast. Here's how the two surfaces compare honestly.
Natural grass isn't the wrong choice for everyone. But in the Fraser Valley, the maintenance math usually tips toward turf within a few years. We'll give you an honest assessment when we come out.

How we build it
The base is everything
Any turf looks fine on day one. The base determines how it looks in year five. The Fraser Valleygets over 1,600 mm of rain a year — if your drainage base isn't engineered properly, the turf fails. This is what we build under every install.
Excavation
We dig out 3–4 inches of existing soil and remove the old lawn. This is where cheap installs cut corners — they lay over existing ground and wonder why it sags.
Crushed rock base
We compact 3 inches of ¾" crushed rock. This is the structural layer. It moves water, stays level, and doesn't shift under freeze-thaw or heavy use.
Drainage grade
We pitch the base 1–2% away from the house and toward natural drainage paths. In the Fraser Valley, water management isn't optional. It's the whole job.
Weed membrane
A commercial-grade barrier goes down before the turf. It stops weed growth from below without blocking water from moving through.
Turf and infill
We lay the turf, seam it tight, nail the edges, and brush in the right infill for your use — standard sand, antimicrobial pet infill, or cooling silica.
Edge detail
Clean borders along beds, walkways, and fences. Bender board or nailed aluminum edging depending on the application. This is what separates a finished job from a rough one.
We don't shortcut the base. Not on a $3,000 job, not on a $30,000 one.
That's why Fraser Valleyhomeowners keep calling us back for their next yard, their neighbour's yard, and their parents' yard.
Pricing
How much does artificial turf cost in Abbotsford?
Most residential turf installs in Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley run between $12 and $22 per square foot, installed. That includes materials, base prep, and labour. Here's what moves the number.
Yard size
Bigger areas cost more in materials but less per square foot. Most residential yards fall between 400–1,200 sq ft.
Base prep
If your yard has compacted clay, poor drainage, or needs excavation, the base work adds time and material. Skipping this step ruins the install.
Turf grade
Pile height, blade shape, and backing weight vary. We'll show you the difference in person so you can choose what fits your yard and budget.
Infill type
Standard silica sand, antimicrobial pet infill, and cooling infill all sit at different price points depending on the application.
Edges and complexity
Curved beds, tight corners, retaining walls, and equipment footings take longer to detail cleanly.
Why cheap installs fail fast
Cut-rate turf jobs skip the base or use thin rock. In the Fraser Valley's wet winters, that means pooling, sinking edges, and turf that looks rough within two or three seasons. A proper install on a deep crushed-rock base lasts decades.

Synthetic grass questions, answered
Does artificial turf work in Abbotsford's rainy weather?
Yes, and drainage is the key. We build every install on a base that moves water away fast, so your turf clears rain quickly and doesn't pool or stay soggy through our wet season.
How long does artificial turf last?
A quality turf on a properly built base holds up for many years of regular use. The base we build underneath is what makes the difference in how long it stays looking good.
Is artificial turf safe for kids and pets?
Yes. We use pet-rated and play-rated turf with non-toxic infill options, and we can add a cushioned underlay for play areas. It drains and rinses clean, which keeps it sanitary.
Do I still have to maintain artificial turf?
Very little. The odd rinse, a quick brush now and then, and clearing leaves. No mowing, watering, fertilizing, or edging.
Can you install turf over concrete or a patio?
Yes. We add a drainage layer suited to the surface and fit the turf cleanly, so rooftops, patios, balconies, and decks all work.
How long does an install take?
Most residential yards are done in a few days, depending on size and prep. We'll give you a clear timeline with your quote.
What areas around Abbotsford do you serve?
We cover Abbotsford and the surrounding Fraser Valley, including Chilliwack, Mission, Langley, Aldergrove, Clearbrook, Matsqui, Mount Lehman, and Sumas Mountain.
Will the turf get hot in summer?
Turf does warm up in direct sun like any surface. A quick rinse cools it down fast, and shaded or pet areas can use cooler infill options.
