Dogs and lawns don't get along. If you've got a dog, you've got worn paths, yellow burn spots where they pee, holes from digging, and a mud pit by the back door for half the year. You can reseed forever and the dog will undo it in a week. Pet-grade artificial grass is the one fix that actually keeps up with a dog.
Not all turf is pet turf
This is the part people miss. Standard landscape turf and pet turf aren't the same product. Pet-grade synthetic grass uses a fully permeable backing so liquid drains straight through instead of sitting on top. Pair that with the right base and infill and you get a surface that rinses clean and doesn't hold odour.
- Permeable backing, so urine drains through rather than pooling.
- A high-drainage base built to flush liquid away quickly.
- Antimicrobial infill that controls odour between rinses.
- Edges and seams locked down so a digger can't lift them.
What about the smell?
This is the first question every dog owner asks. With the right setup, odour isn't an issue. Urine drains through and a quick rinse with the hose carries it down through the base. The antimicrobial infill handles the rest. The yards that smell are the ones installed with a non-draining base or standard infill, which is why the build matters more than the brand of grass.
Will my dog dig through it?
Not if it's installed right. The turf is secured around every edge and seam, so there's nothing for a dog to get a claw under. Most dogs lose interest in digging once there's no loose dirt to dig into. We've put in plenty of runs for serious diggers in Langley and Aldergrove that have held up fine.
A dedicated dog run vs. the whole yard
You don't have to turf the entire yard. A lot of owners do a dedicated dog run, a clean, contained, easy-to-rinse strip the dog uses, and leave the rest of the yard as is. Others turf the whole backyard so the kids and the dog share one clean, mud-free space. Either works. We'll talk through what fits your property and your dog.
Why it holds up here
The Fraser Valley throws rain, heat and frost at a yard, and a dog adds heavy daily traffic on top. Pet-grade turf on a proper draining base takes all of it. No mud in the wet months, no dead patches in summer, no digging, and no smell. It's the closest thing to a maintenance-free yard a dog owner can get.
If you're tired of the mud-and-mud-patch routine, we install pet turf and dog runs across Abbotsford, Langley, Surrey and the rest of the Valley. Send us a photo of your space or call for a free measure and we'll tell you exactly what it needs.
