How to Maintain Artificial Turf: The Real Answer (It's Not Much)

5 min read ·

The selling point of artificial turf is that it needs almost nothing. That is true, with one qualifier: almost. A synthetic lawn that gets zero attention will look dull, hold odours if you have pets, and get the blades matted flat in high-traffic spots. The good news is that the actual maintenance takes less time in a year than a single session of mowing ever did.

The basics: what every turf owner should do

  • Rinse with a hose every few weeks, more often if you have pets. It keeps the surface fresh and washes away dust and pollen.
  • Brush the blades upright two or three times a year with a stiff-bristle broom or a power brush. This is especially important in high-traffic areas where the pile gets pushed flat.
  • Clear leaves and debris regularly in autumn. Leaves left sitting can break down and create organic material that encourages moss.
  • Check the edges and seams once a year. A loose edge caught early is a ten-minute fix. Left for a season, it becomes a repair job.

Pet turf: a slightly different routine

If dogs use the lawn regularly, add a rinse after every few toilet sessions. Urine drains through immediately but a quick flush with the hose twice a week keeps odour from building up in the infill. Once or twice a year, a mild enzymatic cleaner diluted and hosed through the surface handles anything a regular rinse misses.

The infill in a pet run does slowly become saturated over several years. A top-up of fresh antimicrobial infill every three to four years keeps the drainage and odour control working properly. We handle that as a straightforward maintenance service.

What to avoid

  • Metal rakes and wire brushes. They pull the blades and can damage the backing.
  • Bleach or harsh chemicals. They degrade the fibres and kill infill performance. Mild soap, enzymatic cleaners, and plain water are all you need.
  • Parking heavy vehicles on it. Occasional foot traffic is fine. Repeated vehicle weight compresses the base and mats the turf permanently.
  • Leaving sharp metal furniture with no pads on it. Chair legs with exposed metal edges can cut fibres over time.

When to call for a professional service

Most turf lawns go five or more years without needing professional attention beyond a top-up brush. If you notice a seam lifting, a low spot that holds water, or the infill level has dropped noticeably and brushing is not restoring the pile, those are good triggers to have someone in to assess. An early fix is always simpler and cheaper than one that has been left to worsen.
