Turf vs. Xeriscaping for Fraser Valley Front Yards
May 11, 2026 6 min read

If you're done with a thirsty front lawn, you've probably looked at two options: artificial turf or xeriscaping with drought-tolerant plants and rock. Both cut water and upkeep. They just get you there differently.
What xeriscaping gives you
Xeriscaping leans on hardy plants, mulch, and stone to create a low-water yard. Done well it looks natural and supports pollinators. The catch is that it's still a garden. There's weeding, plants to replace, and a look that some people love and others find too "rocky" for a front yard.
What turf gives you
Turf gives you a clean, green, even surface with essentially no ongoing care. No weeding, no mulch top-ups, no plants dying off. It reads as a tidy lawn, which suits a lot of Fraser Valley street fronts better than a rockscape. And it stays green through our grey winter when a xeriscape can look bare.
We install residential artificial turf across Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley, including Mount Lehman. Call us for a free quote.
Cost and effort
Xeriscaping can be cheaper to start if you do the planting yourself, but it takes a season or two to fill in and needs ongoing tending. Turf costs more upfront and is essentially done the day it's installed. After that, both are far cheaper than a watered lawn.
You don't have to pick just one
Some of our favourite front yards in Mount Lehman and around Abbotsford combine the two: a crisp turf area for the clean green look, with xeriscaped beds of drought-tolerant plants around the edges. You get tidy and natural at the same time, and still almost no water bill.
If you want a true lawn look with zero fuss, turf is the move. If you want plants and habitat and don't mind some garden work, xeriscaping fits. Plenty of people land somewhere in between.
